Washington (CNN) -- Will an anti-incumbent wave return Republicans to power in the House and Senate, or can Democrats engineer a late rush to hold on to their congressional majorities?
The 2010 mid-term elections comes down to campaign basics in the final nine days until vote-counting begins.
For now, the two parties agree that Republicans will win more seats than they currently hold, but they differ sharply on how many and whether a major power shift will occur.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele told NBC's "Meet the Press" program that an unprecedented GOP wave would win control of both chambers as well as state legislatures in a broad condemnation of President Barack Obama and Democratic policies.
"The voters are tired of the fact that the federal government has not listened to them over the past two years, has moved in its own direction, at its own rhythm and they want to pull back on that," Steele said. "And I think you're going to see a wave, an unprecedented wave on election day that's going to surprise a lot of people."
His Democratic counterpart, former Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine, pointed to strengthening poll numbers for his party's candidates as a sign that the Democratic base was getting energized.
"From this point forward, it's all about turnout and ground game, and we're seeing good early voting trends," said Kaine, the Democratic National Committee chairman, when asked on the ABC program "This Week" if Democrats can hold their majorities. "We've got work to do, but we think we can do it."
While Kaine said the House remains uncertain, he sounded much more confident about the Senate.
"Four or five months ago, the Republicans thought they had a great chance at taking both houses," Kaine said. "For a variety of reasons, the Senate has gotten much more difficult for them. And again, we're seeing this week strong moves in polling for our Senate candidates" in several states.
One of those reasons is inexperienced, conservative ideologues backed by the Tea Party movement who defeated mainstream Republicans in primary elections and now trail Democratic foes as the November 2 vote approaches.
The Delaware race is a prime example. Christine O'Donnell's primary win over nine-term Republican Rep. Mike Castle made a Senate seat once considered likely Republican now an apparent Democratic victory for previously little-known Chris Coons.
O'Donnell's campaign became a national joke over a long-ago comment that she once "dabbled in witchcraft" and other missteps. It also exposed a rift within the political right between the mainstream Republican establishment, which criticized O'Donnell and other Tea Party backed candidates, and the more conservative Tea Party movement.
With the election approaching, Republicans put on a united front Sunday, with GOP strategist Karl Rove -- one of O'Donnell's harshest critics -- calling the Tea Party movement "patriotic" and "incredibly positive."
While noting that Tea Party backers "are not people who are skilled in the ways of Washington," Rove told the CBS program "Face the Nation" he welcomed the movement as a "wholesome development" that would greatly increase Republican turnout in a mid-term election.
Rove predicted Republicans will win well over 50 House seats to easily grab majority control of the chamber, and that a GOP Senate majority also was possible.
On the same program, Democratic Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland predicted a different outcome, due to voter distrust of what he called special interest money going for anonymous donations to groups running attack ads against Democratic candidates.
The issue hammered by Democrats including Obama in recent weeks was proving resonant, Van Hollen said.
"I'm confident the Democrats are going to retain their majority because the American people are connecting the dots between these tens of millions of dollars of secret special interest money," he said, later adding: "The early voting states are showing good news for the Democrats."
Both Rove and Steele said election disclosure laws should be changed, but added that the anonymous donations to groups running political ads complied with current law. Rove added that Democrats including Obama benefited from similar anonymous campaign funding in the past.

Hurricane Richard to dump rain on Belize, Yucatan

(CNN) -- The storm known as Richard intensified in the Caribbean from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, the National Hurricane Center reported.
Hurricane Richard was located off the northeast coast of Honduras, moving west-northwest at 12 mph Sunday morning, the center said.
The storm is forecast to continue to strengthen, possibly becoming a Category 2 hurricane before it reaches the coast of Belize by Sunday evening.
Along with hurricane force winds, the main threat from the slow-moving Richard is the large amounts of rain it will dump on Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula. It is expected to produce three to six inches of rain with local amounts totaling 10 inches. These rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mud slides, especially in the mountainous terrain.
Hurricane Richard is expected to weaken over land and reemerge in the Bay of Campeche as a tropical depression. Conditions are not favorable for redevelopment in the extreme southwestern Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center expects Richard to continue to dissipate into a remnant low.
"It is not a concern for the U.S.," said John Cangialosi with the hurricane center. "Even if it does get into the southern Gulf of Mexico, a very strong wind sheer of that area will continue to weaken the system."

A wind sheer is caused when winds go in different directions, causing the storm to weaken.

Haiti cholera death toll exceeds 250

The death toll from a cholera epidemic in Haiti topped 250 on Sunday amid fears it may spread in the country's crowded, earthquake-ravaged capital.

All those people had travelled to the capital from the Artibonite region to the north to seek treatment, the officials said.
UN spokeswoman Imogen Wall said the five were quickly diagnosed and isolated.
Gabriel Thimote, director general of Haiti's Health Department, told a news conference in Port-au-Prince on Sunday that 253 people have died of the bacterial infection, while total cases number 3,015.
Some fear the outbreak could spread to squalid relief camps around the capital where people have been living since an earthquake devastated the country Jan. 12.
Authorities have started public education campaigns, using the media to tell people what to do if they think they have contracted the intestinal disease, freelance journalist Ansel Herz told CBC News.
"There is a lot of misinformation. I keep hearing from Haitians that they think it's transmitted through fish. It's [drinking] water and food that is contaminated," he said.
On Friday, Herz visited a crowded east-side Port-au-Prince slum, where for the past nine months, people have been living in tents ripped repeatedly by winds and rain.
"Just last week, they got a water tank from an NGO for potable water to supply them with clean water, but they haven't received any water to drink. People yesterday were pleading with me to get them help. The relief effort here really has not worked for many people."
Julie Schindall of Oxfam International said Haiti is dealing with a "very virulent" strain of cholera. However, she said aid workers are confident they can control it.
"We know that the people of Port-au-Prince have much better access to clean water, hospital services and latrines, and they're much better educated on good hygiene practices because of the earthquake response, because of that huge influx of aid and education to prevent an outbreak of water-borne disease.
"So we are working with some better resources in the urban area as compared to the rural area of Artibonite," she said.

Mr Clegg, whose Liberal Democrats opposed the war in Iraq, said the allegations of killings, torture and abuse disclosed by the leaked American logs should be "properly examined".
"We can bemoan how these leaks occurred, but I think the nature of the allegations made are extraordinarily serious," he said in BBC interview.

"They are distressing to read about and they are very serious."
Asked if there should be an inquiry into the role of British troops, he said: "I think anything that suggests that basic rules of war, conflict and engagement have been broken or that torture has been in any way condoned are extremely serious and need to be looked at."
His response would appear to put him at odds with the Ministry of Defence, whose secretary of state, Liam Fox, is viewed as one of the most hardline backers of an aggressive defence posture in the Cabinet.
The ministry's statement in response to the Wikileaks disclosures suggested it was giving priority to the ongoing Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war.
"We condemn any un-authorised release of classified material," it said. "This can put the lives of UK service personnel and those of our allies at risk and make the job of Armed Forces in all theatres of operation more difficult and more dangerous.
"It would be inappropriate to speculate on the specific detail of these documents without further investigation while the Iraq inquiry is ongoing."
The 400,000 documents released by Wikileaks contained allegations of US and British troops turning a blind eye to torture and other abuses by Iraqi forces, and of higher than previously reported civilian casualties, including at the hands of American soldiers.
The government's response was led at the weekend by Mr Clegg and Vince Cable, the business secretary, who is also a Liberal Democrat and a critic of the war.
The Conservative Party supported the then prime minister, Tony Blair, in his decision to join the Americans in invading Iraq, but made little comment. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said Mr Fox was making no personal comment on the Wikileaks disclosures.
There was also a difference of tone between Mr Clegg and Mr Cable, who in a separate interview with Sky News was highly critical of the leaks of information.
"The Liberal Democrats were strong opponents of the Iraq war and we do feel vindicated by what's happening," Mr Cable said.
"But the way in which the leaks happened, which has indeed - potentially by exposing people's identity - put lives at risk, is not a responsible way of doing it."
He too backed calls for an investigation into the new revelations.
As well as the allegations of torture, the documents have also disclosed failings by the British military and British security contractors.
In one incident in March 2005, a British helicopter after being alerted by army intelligence began tailing a car said to contain the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, the notorious Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. But it ran out of fuel and by the time it had returned from base troops on the ground had lost track of him.
Zarqawi, who had fought in Afghanistan with Osama bin Laden and had a £25 million bounty on his head, went on to lead an insurgency marked by particular atrocities against Iraq's Shia community that cost thousands of lives. He was finally killed with his family in an American air strike in June 2006.
Human rights groups have also called for a full investigation into the information contained in the leaks, while a British lawyer, Phil Shiner, of Public Interest Lawyers, claimed that British soldiers had killed an eight-year-old girl in Basra.
It is thought he was referring to Hanan Saleh Matrud, who was killed in 2003. British forces have admitted her injuries could have been caused by a ricocheting warning shot.

"Paranormal 2" leads North American box office

(Reuters) - "Paranormal Activity 2," a low-budget successor to last year's surprise chiller, got an early start on Halloween by scaring up a hefty $41.5 million during its first three days at the North American box office, distributor Paramount Pictures said on Sunday.
The haunted-house film shocked not only thrill seekers -- as expected -- but industry forecasters, who had predicted an opening in the $20 million range.
"I'm definitely surprised," said Don Harris, Paramount's executive VP for distribution, who had given the film an outside chance of cracking $30 million.
Its No. 1 opening gives the Viacom Inc unit the top two films across the United States and Canada, with last weekend's overperformer "Jackass 3D" slipping to No. 2 with $21.6 million. The two-week haul for the third entry in the prankster franchise rose to $87.1 million, exceeding the lifetime totals of its two predecessors.
"Paranormal 2" also earned about $22 million from 21 foreign markets, Paramount said. Britain led the field with a $6 million opening, although it was not immediately clear where the film ranked.
With a production cost of just $3 million, the movie should generate good profits for Paramount. The first film cost about $15,000 to make, and ended up with $107 million in North America, driven almost exclusively by word-of-mouth in the deliberate absence of a major marketing campaign.
Harris said the aim of the new film -- which actually serves as a prequel -- was to retain the fans of the original while expanding its mainstream appeal.
Sales comparisons with the first film are difficult since it played in limited release before rising to No. 1 with a $21 million haul in its fifth weekend.
Also new to the top 10 was Clint Eastwood's latest directing effort "Hereafter," which came in at No. 4 with a modest $12 million. Matt Damon stars in Warner Bros' $50 million supernatural thriller, which garnered mixed reviews.
"We're in the marathon business with (Eastwood), not the sprint," said Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at the Time Warner Inc unit. "It's always about week three or four."

(CNN) -- Fran Crippen, a star open-water swimmer, was at a competition in the United Arab Emirates when he made a promise to his longtime prep-school coach back in the states.
He would call by five in the morning Saturday with the outcome and details of the 10-kilometer Marathon Swimming World Cup.
Richard Shoulberg, who began coaching Crippen since he was seven, knew something was wrong when the athlete had not called by 5:45 a.m. ET, he told CNN.
Indeed, in the UAE, divers were searching for Crippen after he did not finish the race. They found his body two hours later.
The loss of Crippen, 26, hit hard in suburban Philadelphia, where he grew up in a family of swimmers who trained and began competing there. Crippen was on target to achieve his goal of being an Olympian -- a dream cut short.
"We're all grieving. We're all in shock," Shoulberg said.
Doctors determined that severe fatigue was behind Crippen's sudden death, UAE Swimming Federation Secretary Saeed Al Hamour told CNN Sunday.
Earlier, however, the head of the water sports club in Fujairah, Ahmed Ibrahim, said that preliminary tests showed that he suffered a heart attack.
The official report released by the UAE Swimming Federation made no mention of a heart attack.
Crippen died Saturday during the last leg of the Marathon Swimming World Cup in Fujairah, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) said in a news release.
The cause of death is under investigation, FINA said.
In a conversation with Shoulberg 12 hours before the race, Crippen said that the outside temperature was 100 degrees and that the water was 87 degrees.
The high temperatures have led to some speculation that it may have contributed to the death.
However, Al Hamour denied any reports that Crippen's death may have been caused by water temperature or cleanliness.
"The competition was monitored and supervised by the International Swimming Federation. All security measures were taken care of as needed," Al Hamour said. "We've organized so far 14 competitions and championships and never had any death."
Swimming World magazine reported that Crippen fell unconscious during the event and was found by deep-sea divers two hours later near the race's final buoy.
The U.S. Olympic Committee issued a statement Saturday saying it was "extremely saddened" to learn of Crippen's death.
"We send our condolences and deepest sympathies to the Crippen family as well as to our entire swimming community," the USOC statement said. "While details of this tragedy are still forthcoming, we shall keep this outstanding young athlete and his family in our thoughts and prayers."
Crippen won bronze in the 10-kilometer event at the 2009 FINA World Championships and was the gold medalist in the same event at the 2007 Pan American games, according to USA Swimming.
Crippen, of Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, was inspired to take up swimming at age 6 after watching older sister Maddy Crippen compete in the water.
Maddy Crippen was a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team, according to USA Swimming.
Crippen graduated in 2006 from the University of Virginia where he was twice named Atlantic Coast Conference Swimmer of the Year.
He was to be inducted into the athletic hall of fame of his former prep school, the Germantown Academy next month. Instead, he is being remembered as a dedicated swimmer who gave his time to teaching young children how to swim, and introducing high school swimmers to open-water swimming.
"He was an unselfish human being," Shoulberg said.
Crippen's body will be handed over to U.S. Swimming Federation authorities on Monday.

Winner Slams Race Conditions After Swimmer's Death

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ― The president of FINA said Sunday that "overexertion" led to the death of U.S. national team swimmer Fran Crippen at a race in the United Arab Emirates and that the swimming body has launched an investigation into the tragedy.

The 26-year-old Crippen died Saturday while competing in the FINA Open Water 10-kilometer World Cup at Fujairah, east of Dubai. He failed to finish and was found in the water two hours later, organizers said.

The winner of the race, Germany's Thomas Lurz, criticized both FINA and race organizers on Sunday. He said the temperatures were too hot for racing, that FINA's open water schedule was too grueling and that organizers should have done more to ensure swimmers were safe.

"What we know initially is that he exerted himself more than he could, that's what we know," said FINA President Julio Maglione of Uruguay, attending an International Olympic Committee conference in Acapulco, Mexico.

"Apart from the investigation, we are awaiting a report from our technical director who says that everything was normal according to the regulations," Maglione said. "The medical report said it was huge overexertion, that's what they told me."

Gunnar Werner of Sweden, a member of FINA's legal commission and a former FINA honorary member, has been selected to lead the investigation and was due to arrive at the race site late Sunday.

"When he finishes his inquiry we'll put out our position," FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu told The AP. "We understand that they have the medical report in Arabic and they will translate it to English and send it to us. Probably tomorrow we will have it in the office."

Race officials confirmed a medical report and autopsy has been completed.

FINA rules place no limit on how warm the water can be.

"This is usually the case at events in this area," Marculescu said. "For some athletes it's good and for some it's not. Our rules cover only cold water.

"It's very surprising and unpleasant. This is a swimmer with a lot of experience. He was a fantastic guy and he came from a big swimming family," Marculescu said. "We've never had something like that happen in our sport before. I'm sorry for him and his family."

Swimmers complained of the warm water temperatures but Ayman Saad, executive director of the UAE swimming association, played down heat as a factor, saying that the water temperature was 84 degrees Fahrenheit (29 degrees Celsius) at the start of the race.

All safety measures were in place including lifeguards, boats and divers, Saad said, and that FINA had signed off on everything before the race started.

"We are sorry that the guy died but what can we do. This guy was tired and he pushed himself a lot," Saad said. "He went down 400 meters before the finish line."

Usually at open water races of this level, a boat follows the last swimmer on the course.

"What I think happened is that the swimmers were in various groups. This is what I heard," Marculescu said. "On the last feeding station the coach was talking to him. But I really don't know. We have to wait for the investigation and then we will come up with our position on this. Otherwise it's only speculation."

Lurz insisted temperatures must have been above 30 C (86 F) and that several swimmers suffered due to the heat. He said he talked to many swimmers who complained of swollen limbs, water loss and said he saw several who had become confused following their race.

"The water was amazingly hot. For sure, it was more than 30 degrees," Lurz said. "Nobody thought such things like yesterday could happen ... It shows it was really just too hot. It was not just one swimmer. There were many swimmers who had serious problems in the water."

Another German swimmer, Angela Maurer, who finished fourth in the women's category, said she thought the heat was to blame for Crippen's death.

"I think the heat for him was too much," Maurer said, adding that she "will never swim here in the future again."

As well as Crippen, three other swimmers — two U.S. women and one Brazilian — were taken to a local hospital. All were released by Monday. Their names have not been officially released but include Brazilian Allan Do Carmo and American Eva Fabian.

Lurz, a nine-time open water champion, said Crippen's death highlighted the need for changes within the World Cup circuit, including setting a maximum temperature and easing rules that require a swimmer to finish the final race to gain points crucial to moving up the ranking and earning prize money.

Lurz speculated it was probably Crippen's desire to finish the race which cost him his life.

"I'm sure he tried everything because he is a sportsman, he had a heart as (a) sportsman," Lurz said. "He would never give up."

Swimmers on Saturday complained of warmer than usual conditions and Fujairah police have opened an inquiry into Crippen's death. Crippen's former swimming coach, Richard Shoulberg, said Crippen had told him in a recent telephone call that the water was 87 degrees (30.5 C).

Swimmers were the first to respond when Crippen failed to arrive at the finish. Several returned to the water to search for him and were soon followed by police and coast guard divers. Crippen's body was found just before the last buoy on the 2-kilometer triangular course, race organizers said.

"It was unacceptable that swimmers were searching for another swimmer. That is horrible," Lurz said. "Swimmers go under water in seconds. There need to be more boats, jet skis, canoes who can take care of every swimmer."

Lurz and Maurer blamed organizers for allegedly failing to provide enough boats to monitor the swimmers.

"There were not enough lifeguards and there were not enough boats," Maurer said. "There were no jet skis or boats leading the women. I never saw a leading boat. I never saw a rescue boat. I saw nothing."

Crippen was rushed to shore and transported to Fujairah Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"I can't even imagine how this could have happened to Fran," Crippen's teammate Alexander Meyer said.

Maglione said he was told that after eight kilometers Crippen told his coach that he wasn't feeling well.

Swimming officials in the UAE canceled the 15km open water event which was scheduled to be held Wednesday at the same location, with swimmers having expressed concerns.

"We were not staying back for Wednesday's race anyway," said Ana Marcela Cunha, the overall champion in the women's competition.

The 10K race is the only open water discipline that is an Olympic event, having made its debut at the 2008 Beijing Games. FINA had been seeking to add more open water races to the Olympic program but with the IOC not intent on adding events Marculescu said the swimming body has now shifted its focus to adding more athletes to the 10K men's and women's Olympic races, which had 25 competitors each in Beijing.

Singer Katy Perry and one-time lothario Russell Brand are starting married life today following a "private and spiritual ceremony".

The wedding took place at the Aman-e-Khas luxury resort outside the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary, 80 miles from the "pink city" of Jaipur.

A spokesman for the couple said the service was conducted by a friend of the bride's family.

He said: "Russell Brand and Katy Perry are overjoyed to confirm that they were pronounced Mr and Mrs Brand on October 23.

"The very private and spiritual ceremony, attended by the couple's closest family and friends, was performed by a Christian minister and long time friend of the Hudson (Perry) Family.

"The backdrop was the inspirational and majestic countryside of northern India."

A hotel official told the Associated Press that both Brand and Perry wore traditional Indian clothes, with the bride and other female guests dressed in saris.

The venue's trees were illuminated by colourful lights and luxury tents were decorated with flower garlands.

News agency Press Trust of India reported that 21 camels, elephants and horses formed part of Brand's wedding procession from a nearby resort. He was also accompanied by traditional dancers and musicians.

The couple, who met at the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2009, where Brand was host, tried to keep their celebration under wraps.

The 35-year-old comedian proposed to Perry in India outside the Taj Mahal while the pair were enjoying a romantic holiday last December.

One of the tour operators let slip that it would be a six-day celebration beginning with a Hindu ceremony.

About 80 guests are expected to be taken on tours of the tiger sanctuary in the next few days.

Brand has had a reputation for his string of sexual conquests, with one of his liaisons proving to be his undoing during the Sachsgate scandal which saw him resigning from his Radio 2 show.

During a pre-recorded show he and Jonathan Ross left a phone message for veteran actor Andrew Sachs in which Ross made crude comments about Brand's relationship with the Fawlty Towers star's granddaughter Georgina Baillie.

Brand has established a successful Hollywood career and became a surprise publishing success with his memoir.

Perry has become a worldwide success since her first hit I Kissed A Girl in 2008.

The National Park which provided the backdrop for the wedding is one of northern India's largest sanctuaries.

As well as being home to 27 tigers, it also contains leopards, wild boar, hyenas and sloth bears.

It also includes several lakes and a 10th-century fort.

Officials checked noise pollution during the event to ensure the animals were not disturbed.

X Factor's Wagner is a 'sex pest

Flamboyant Wagner Carrilho has been ­threatened with the axe from X Factor after being branded a “sex pest”.
Girl acts have complained he has grabbed them, tried to kiss and cuddle them and touched their legs at the mansion where they stay.
One said: “He keeps touching my legs. I really don’t like it.”
Wagner allegedly grabbed a make-up artist around the thighs and one female researcher refuses to be in a room alone with him.
The researcher lodged a ­complaint to her boss, who spoke to Wagner. An X Factor source said: “He was taken aside and told to tone down his behaviour and ­ensure it was appropriate.”
A spokesman confirmed last night: “We have a duty of care to all our ­contestants and staff which we take very ­seriously. Wagner was spoken to and this matter has now been resolved.”
The 54-year-old singer, who puts his touchy-feely behaviour down to Brazilian exuberance, has been told that if he does not stop he will have to leave the show.
It comes as the Sunday Mirror can reveal claims from Wagner’s first wife that he “would not leave her alone” after they split.
The sex-pest allegations are yet another blow to the twice-divorced singer, who went into meltdown yesterday over the song he was given for last night’s live show, a Spice Up Your Life/La Vida Loca mash-up.
Earlier this week he is said to have had a row with a female welfare officer brought in to ensure contestants’ well-being.
The pair were seen shouting and Wagner had to be held back by a guard. The singer is refusing to share a room with fellow finalist John Adeleye at the mansion in North London’s Mill Hill after a separate bust-up.
A source said: “Wagner is by far and away the least popular ­contestant because of his over-the-top behaviour. He makes noise late into the night and he’s very ­confrontational.
“He makes the girls ­uncomfortable. He’s touchy-feely and likes kissing and ­cuddling. He says it’s who he is and it doesn’t mean anything.
“But that’s not how they see it. He’s turned into a bit of a sex pest. In the house the girls dread him coming in.
“If he sits at the table and one of the girls is there they make their excuses and leave so they don’t have to be near him. If he’s sitting next to a girl on a sofa he will think nothing of ­grabbing their legs and grabbing their face or trying to kiss them. He says to them, ‘You’re beautiful, you’re gorgeous, you’re sexy’ and pretends it’s all fun but when he’s gone all the girls talk about how much they hate it.
“There was an incident at the studio when he was getting his make-up done and he leaned over and grabbed the make-up lady around the thighs.
“He said, ‘You’re sexy, you’re so beautiful’ and wouldn’t let go until the head of the make-up team told him categorically he had to.”
Wagner has also annoyed other acts in the house by constantly singing and making noise. He has infuriated singer Mary Byrne over suggestions they were becoming an item. Yet his outrageous shows – complete with scantily clad ­backing dancers and ladies’ man image – have helped endear him to X Factor’s 14 million fans.
Wagner’s first wife Trudi Brass said the former PE teacher was charming and handsome when they met in 1992. But they split five years later as he became ­“overbearing” – and he would not let go.
She said: “It was a nightmare. He was a beautiful man when he was younger – slim and very good-looking, nothing like he looks now with all those tattoos.
“He was very intelligent and had been studying at one of Brazil’s leading universities. But it was one of those situations where you know you’ve made a mistake and you know you’ve got to escape.
“He became too possessive of me and I was frightened because he was so physically strong, although he never hit me.”
Wagner married a second time, although that marriage also ended in divorce before he met his most recent partner Jenny Yawari, 36, mother of his three-year-old son.
But the bitter break-up of that relationship means he has not seen his boy for over two years.
He is in dispute with Jenny over access to his son.
Trudi, who saw ­Wagner two years ago, said: “I felt very sorry for him because when I went to his house he had loads of toys but explained that his son didn’t live with him.”
Friends say the split from Jenny and his son sent the eccentric singer, who lives alone in a ­bungalow in Pensnett, West ­Midlands, into depression.
It can also be ­revealed that Wagner was charged with actual bodily harm after pensioner Alan ­Hamilton, 68, was attacked in a row over a parking space in 2003. But the charges were dropped.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The momentum of the midterm elections is with the GOP, but now is not the time for supporters to let up, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin told a jubilant crowd of Florida Republicans on Saturday.
"Now is the time to dig deep," Palin said with 10 days to go until the elections. Hundreds of Republicans with "Fire Pelosi" and "Listen to Me!" signs clapped, hooted and waved American flags in the ballroom of an Orlando hotel near Walt Disney World. The gathering was cast as a fundraising rally but had the feel of a county fair.
Palin took aim at President Barack Obama, saying he needed to apologize to the 14.8 million people unemployed in the U.S.
"You know, the president is now telling us that we're not thinking straight because of all the fear and frustration," Palin said. "You know Mr. President, you have it right on one point there. We are afraid, knowing that your economic policies are driving us off a cliff."
Appearing with Palin were top GOP fundraisers, Republican national committee members and conservative activists such as anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist. The former Alaska governor also was joined by Republican Senate candidate Marco Rubio.
Polls have shown Rubio with a large lead in a three-way Senate race with Democratic Rep. Kendrick Meek and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who is running as an independent after dropping out of the Republican Party when it appeared he wouldn't win the GOP primary race.
Rubio said to cheers that he would work to repeal health care reform and would have voted against stimulus money.
"This election is about turning out and voting," Rubio said. "This is all it's about right now."
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele thanked Tea Party supporters for their contributions to the Republican Party.
"They restored our faith in the Constitution," Steele said.
The RNC chairman also had harsh words for incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, a congressman from metro Orlando who has been accused of getting a third-party candidate to run in his race under the Tea Party label in order to siphon votes from his Republican challenger. Grayson has said he did no such thing.

MINNEAPOLIS – Why go backward? President Barack Obama challenged voters Saturday. He said Republicans can only hope Americans forget which party brought them a "lost decade."
Obama closed a four-day campaign swing ahead of the Nov. 2 elections with a spirited rally imploring supporters to defeat the conventional wisdom that Democrats face steep losses. He cast the choice Election Day as one between the economic policies "that got us into this mess" and the policies leading the nation out.
"All they've got is the same old stuff that they were peddling over the last decade," he said of Republicans. "I just don't want to relive the past." He said: "The other side is betting on amnesia. It is up to you to show them that you have not forgotten."
Obama rallied in Minneapolis to help former Sen. Mark Dayton in his race for governor against Republican state legislator Tom Emmer and the Independence Party's Tom Horner, a public relations executive and political pundit. Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty's second term runs out in January.
"Mark Dayton has spent his life working for Minnesota and now I need all of you to fight for Mark Dayton," Obama told a crowd estimated at 11,000 by the University of Minnesota, where he spoke.
It's been a grueling four days of campaigning and fundraising by the president, who since Wednesday had touched down in Oregon, Washington state, California and Nevada. He has been helping congressional allies, such as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, in tight races.
Cheered at large rallies at every stop, Obama begins his basic speech with some flattering talk about the local candidate. Then he launches into his message that voting Republican would be a mistake for the country.
"This election is a choice between the policies that got us into this mess and the policies that are leading us out of it," he told the Minnesota rally.
Voters are angry about the economy, unemployment and other issues and, according to polls, seem intent on taking out their frustrations on Democrats — the party in power at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue — on Nov. 2.
But Obama is trying to remind the broad coalition that helped elect him in 2008 — women, Hispanics, minorities, and young voters — that change has always been slow to come but is coming, so they should not give up.
"Don't let them tell you that change isn't possible," Obama said. "It's just hard, that's all."
Pawlenty, who has said he'll decide next spring whether to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, released a video welcoming Obama to Minnesota with a tongue-in-cheek vocabulary lesson in the use of local expressions like "uffdah" and "yikes."
"As in the sentence, 'The federal deficit was over a trillion dollars the last two years, and will be next year, too. Yikes!'" Pawlenty said. The video was posted on YouTube.
Before leaving Minneapolis, Obama also was helping to raise about $600,000 for House Democrats at a fundraiser attended by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., chairman of the House Democratic campaign effort, and others.
Obama was returning to Washington late Saturday and will head out again next week for more campaigning.
On Monday, he'll be in Rhode Island to help raise more money for House Democrats. He is scheduled to spend the rest of the week in Washington, including an appearance Wednesday on "The Daily Show" with Jon Stewart.
He plans to travel again the weekend before the election, making a final get-out-the-vote push at events in Bridgeport, Conn., Chicago, Philadelphia and Cleveland.

G.O.P. Is Poised to Seize the House, if Not the Senate

WASHINGTON — A costly and polarizing Congressional campaign heads into its closing week with Republicans in a strong position to win the House but with Democrats maintaining a narrow edge in the battle for the Senate, according to a race-by-race review and lawmakers and strategists on both sides. 
President Obama campaigned for a fourth consecutive day on Saturday as the Democratic Party threw its full weight into preventing a defeat of historic proportions in an election shaped by a sour economy, intense debate over the White House’s far-reaching domestic agenda and the rise of a highly energized grass-roots conservative movement.
But Republicans have placed enough seats into play that Democrats now seem likely to give up many of the gains they made in the last two election cycles, leaving Washington on the brink of a substantial shift in the balance of power.
The final nine days of the midterm election are unfolding across a wide landscape, with several dozen House races close enough to break either way, determining whether the election produces a Republican wave that reaches deep into the Democratic ranks. In the Senate, Democrats were bracing to lose seats, but the crucial contests remained highly fluid as Republicans struggled to pull away in several Democratic-leaning states.
The candidates, political parties and a torrent of outside groups made fresh strategic investments and pumped yet another multimillion-dollar wave of television advertising into House races across the country, hoping to press their advantages across a battleground that has expanded to nearly 100 districts.
In the House, 28 Democratic seats are either leaning Republican or all but lost to Republican candidates, according to the latest ratings of Congressional races by The New York Times, while 40 seats held by Democrats are seen as tossups. To win a majority, Republicans need to pick up a net of 39 seats; to reach that threshold they will probably have to win at least 44 seats now held by Democrats to offset a handful of projected Democratic victories in Republican-held districts.
In the Senate, races for Democratic-held seats in California, Colorado, Illinois, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Washington and West Virginia are rated as tossups by The Times. Republicans seem assured of taking Democratic seats in other states, including Arkansas and Indiana, but must win at least five of the seven most competitive remaining races to seize a majority, and Democrats improved their standing in at least three of those states last week.
In the final week of campaigning, Democrats are planning new investments to protect Senator Patty Murray in Washington, while Republicans are strengthening their effort to defeat Senator Barbara Boxer of California.
Candidates began closing arguments on Saturday, reprising divisions over Mr. Obama’s economic stimulus bill and clashing over private investment accounts for Social Security, an extension of the Bush-era tax cuts and a host of domestic policies.
While the outlook is grim for Democrats in the House, according to interviews with candidates, pollsters and consultants involved in races, the field remains volatile and strong voter turnout could save some seats. Yet even by conservative calculations, Republicans are well within reach of winning back a majority they lost four years ago.
“There are Democratic candidates who still appear to be in the race, but our candidates are delivering the fatal blow,” said Representative Pete Sessions of Texas, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. “If we look all across the country, we are seeing incumbent Democrats in a world of hurt.”
A wave of anxiety swept across Democrats, regardless of seniority, geographic region or whether they voted for Mr. Obama’s agenda on the hot-button issues of health care, economic stimulus or climate change legislation.
Representative Barney Frank, Democrat of Massachusetts, gave a personal loan of $200,000 to his campaign to wage his toughest fight in years.
Representative John D. Dingell, Democrat of Michigan, the longest-serving member, invited former President Bill Clinton to his district for two stops on Sunday. Representative Gene Taylor, Democrat of Mississippi, who often is a reliable vote for Republicans, struggled to defend a seat he has held for two decades.
Republicans went after Mr. Taylor with a TV ad that opens with the precise moment Mr. Taylor supported Representative Nancy Pelosi for speaker in 2007 to the applause of his colleagues on the House floor. “This is the moment Democrat Gene Taylor turned his back on us,” the narrator said, echoing a theme that has emerged in district after district.
As they face the certainty of losses, Democrats are in a sense victims of their own success after winning 55 seats and expanding far into conservative territory over the last two election cycles. Now they are trying to defy history and demographics as they struggle to hang on to the districts in a midterm election with their party in the White House.
“We’re duking it out everywhere,” said Representative Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Should the Democrats manage to hang on to the House, it would be considered a major political upset at this point.

 Republicans focused their efforts heavily on the Ohio River Valley, hoping to win back a trove of districts in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Democrats were trying to build a firewall in the Northeast, including seats in Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania, where a strong performance could keep Republicans from repeating their 1994 sweep, when they captured 54 seats.

With time running out, leaders of both parties planned to spend the weekend in districts across the country. Mr. Obama appeared on Saturday evening in Minneapolis with Ms. Pelosi, raising $600,000 to help pay for a final burst of advertising for House candidates. As she sought to rally the Democratic crowd, she said: “When the public knows the choice, we think that we will win — we know.”
Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, appeared in West Virginia with the top Republican candidates, while Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the likely speaker if Republicans take the House, campaigned Saturday in Kentucky on behalf of Andy Barr, a Republican who is trying to upend Representative Ben Chandler, a conservative Democrat.
Yet other vulnerable Democrats continued to hang tough, and their resilience led Republicans to look elsewhere to find Democrats who had not prepared for difficult contests.
Representative Tom Perriello of Virginia, who for months has been seen by Republicans as among the most endangered freshmen Democrats, is now in a race seen as one that could go either way. Representative Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, whose district was aggressively pursued by Republicans, said he had seen his re-election prospects improve in recent weeks as voters have focused more closely on the contest, and he said he expected many of his embattled Democratic colleagues to prevail.
“I am normally an optimistic fellow, but I am also realistic,” Mr. Perlmutter said in an interview. “I have been talking to my buddies, and they are in tough races. But they are still right in it.”
Democrats are seeking to diminish their losses by mobilizing key voting blocs, particularly suburban and upper-income voters who can be motivated by concerns about Republicans returning to power in Washington and imposing a conservative, antigovernment agenda while trying to undo much of what Democrats pushed through Congress. Students and black voters, who offered crucial support in Mr. Obama’s 2008 campaign, are also important constituencies in several districts across the Midwest, Northeast and South.
“I think they are going to show up far beyond what the polling indicates, and that is the secret to winning,” said Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the No. 3 Democrat in the House, who appeared for candidates in Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Minnesota and New York, with plans to stump in the Carolinas next week.
“What I am seeing district by district is a different result than if you are looking at the House over all,” said Mr. Clyburn, the highest-ranking African-American in Congress.
Even though Republican optimism is high in the closing days, party leaders have ordered lawmakers and candidates to avoid overconfidence.
“It’s a battle to the end,” said Representative Greg Walden of Oregon, a vice chairman of the Republican Congressional committee. “But only 20 months ago, Republicans were viewed like mold — not really alive, but you couldn’t kill us either. We’ve come back.”

Ses deux mariages et ses trois enfants ont également été à l'origine de polémiques, mais malgré ces controverses, Michael Jackson demeure une des figures majeures de la musique des quarante dernières années. Le Livre Guiness des Records le déclare homme de spectacle le plus célèbre du monde.[11]

Le 25 juin 2009, le site Tmz.com annonce la mort de Michael Jackson des suites d'une crise cardiaque[12]. L'information est confirmée quelques heures plus tard par un porte-parole de l'institut médico-légal du comté de Los Angeles à l'antenne de CNN. "M. Jackson a été transporté à l'hôpital (...) il était inconscient lorsqu'il a été admis et son décès a été constaté à 14H26", heure locale[13].

La famille Jackson compte neuf enfants et Michael Jackson, né le 29 août 1958 en est le septième. Ses parents Joseph Jackson et Katherine Jackson ont en fait eu dix enfants, mais le frère jumeau de Marlon est mort quelques heures après sa naissance. Toute la famille vit dans une petite maison avec deux chambres dans la ville ouvrière de Gary dans l'Indiana en banlieue sud-est de Chicago. Joseph Jackson, est guitariste dans un groupe R'n'B appelé The Falcons, gagne modestement sa vie en travaillant dans une aciérie tandis que Katherine élève les enfants et travaille de temps en temps pour rapporter de l'argent pour la famille[14], qu'elle élève, contre la volonté de leur père, en tant que Témoins de Jéhovah. Cette influence religieuse maternelle donnera à Michael sa force de caractère[15].

Joseph Jackson est un père de famille très autoritaire et impose des règles strictes à ses enfants à qui il interdit de sortir de chez eux le soir lorsqu'il travaille de nuit par sécurité. Dans une interview réalisée par Martin Bashir en 2003, Michael Jackson raconte qu'il les maltraitait physiquement et mentalement[16]. Il se moquait régulièrement de l'apparence physique de Michael en l'appelant « gros nez »[17]. La famille baigne cependant dans lamusique dès le plus jeune âge et Joe joue de la guitare pendant que les enfants chantent[15]. La guitare de Joe est normalement interdite aux enfants, mais Tito le quatrième de la famille y joue de temps en temps lorsque son père est absent. Lorsqu'une corde est cassée, Joe menace ses enfants de les battre s'ils ne lui montrent pas qu'ils savent bien en jouer. C'est à ce moment-là que Joe réalise que Tito et ses frères ont un réel talent. Il offre alors sa propre guitare à Tito, une basse à Jermaine. Vite rejoint par Marlon et Michael en 1964 et renommé The Jackson Five sur proposition d'un de leurs voisins[15]. Michael en devient le chanteur principal grâce à sa voix plus mature que son âge et à son habilité à reproduire les pas de danse de James Brown[18].

Les Jackson 5 commencent à se produire à Gary, à remporter tous les concours auxquels ils participent et à se faire une certaine réputation dans la ville. Joseph décide alors de mettre à profit leur talent pour quitter Gary et les fait se produire le weekend à Chicago, New York et Philadelphie, tout en continuant à aller à l'école en semaine[19]. En 1968, Joe annonce à sa famille qu'ils déménagent à Détroit, car Berry Gordy, alors président de la Motown, les appellent pour une audition a Detroit[14]. Le groupe, officiellement présenté à la presse par leur marraine Diana Ross[20], devient ainsi un des plus populaires de l'écurie Motown, label composé principalement d'artistes noirs. Motown répand la rumeur que c'est Diana Ross elle-même qui a découvert les Jackson Five et a décidé de les présenter au PDG de Motown[20]. Au moment de signer le contrat, Motown et les Jackson Five déménagent de Détroit à Los Angeles[21].

Le premier succès des Jackson Five est I Want You Back, de l'album Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5, qui devient numéro 1 au classement Billboard des singles[22]. Trois autres extraits de l'album deviendront numéro un[23],[24] : ABC en 1970 mis en nomination pour un Grammy Award, The Love You Save et I'll Be There qui restera numéro un pendant cinq semaines[25]. C'est la première fois que les quatre premiers singles d'un groupe deviennent tous numéro 1[25]. L'ascension des Jackson 5 est vertigineuse et le jeune Michael devient le chouchou du public. Leur popularité commencera à décroître vers 1972, mais les Jackson 5 obtiendront encore un succès avec Dancing Machine qui atteindra la deuxième place des classements[26].

Parallèlement à sa carrière avec les Jackson Five, Michael Jackson sort quatre albums solo. L'album Got To Be There sort en janvier 1972 sous le label Motown, alors que Michael a à peine 13 ans. La même année, avec Ben, le jeune Michael acquiert une plus grande maturité vocale, notamment dans les nombreuses ballades de cet album. La chanson-titre deviendra le premier no 1 solo de Michael Jackson en 1972[27]. La chanson étant tirée du film du même nom, ce titre lui vaudra un Golden Globe et une nomination aux Oscars[27]. Music And Me, sorti en 1973, ne rencontre pas le même succès que les trois précédents albums[28]. En 1975, Michael sort Forever, Michael.

Après Dancing Machine, les Jackson Five se sentent de plus en plus frustrés avec le label Motown et se plaignent de ne pas pouvoir choisir leurs morceaux et leurs instruments. Joe Jackson, longtemps manager du groupe, se plaint également d'avoir perdu son influence au profit de Berry Gordy, président de la Motown. Les membres du groupe estiment par ailleurs que les royalties que leur accorde la Motown ne sont pas assez importantes au regard de leur succès. Tous ces éléments d'insatisfaction forcent les Jackson Five à annoncer en juillet 1975 qu'ils quitteront la Motown à la fin de leur contrat, en mars 1976. Au même moment, ils signent un nouveau contrat avec Epic Records, un label fondé par CBS Records[29]. Cette séparation est douloureuse pour le groupe puisque la Motown estime qu'ils ont rompu leur contrat en signant avec Epic avant la fin de leur précédent engagement. Après un procès, la Motown conserve ses droits sur le nom Jackson Five et le groupe se renomme alors The Jacksons. La Motown se voit également le droit d'utiliser les chansons des Jackson Five dans de futures compilations[29]. Cet épisode mène également à la perte d'un des membres du groupe puisque Jermaine, qui s'est marié à la fille de Berry Gordy, ne suit pas ses frères chez Epic et entame alors une carrière solo chez Motown. Il est remplacé par le benjamin des Jackson, Randy, qui était déjà apparu dans le groupe en tant que percussionniste[24]. À cette occasion, Michael termine également son contrat le liant en tant qu'artiste solo à Motown et signe aussi chez Epic.

Il faut attendre 1978 et l'album Destiny pour prendre la mesure du talent des frères Jacksons et plus particulièrement de Michael. Cet album, entièrement produit et écrit par les Jacksons, donnera deux hits Blame It On The Boogie et Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground). L'album suivant, Triumph, sort en 1980 et contient notamment les hits Lovely One et Can You Feel It dont la vidéo, imaginée par Michael lui-même, est quasiment un remake de Rencontres du troisième type. Un album live parait en 1981 regroupant des chansons des Jackson 5 à The Jacksons. Michael éclipse désormais le groupe, il y chante ses propres compositions : Rock with You, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough She's Out of My Life, toutes deux extraites de l'album Off The Wall, cinquième album solo de Michael Jackson sorti en 1979.

Il décide alors de signer chez Epic Records (label qui sera racheté plus tard et deviendra une filiale de Sony Music), contre l'avis de beaucoup de personnes de son entourage.

En 1979, Michael Jackson sort Off The Wall, co-produit avec Quincy Jones qu'il a rencontré sur le tournage de la comédie musicale The Wiz. Certaines chansons ont été composées par Rod Temperton, Stevie Wonder et Paul McCartney[30]. L'album remporte un succès mondial et se vend à 12-15 millions d'exemplaires[31]. De nombreux singles extraits de l'album se hissent en tête des palmarès. Rock with You devient numéro 1 au Billboard Hot 100[32], de même que pour Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough. La ballade She's Out of My Life intègre le Top 10 du Billboard Hot 100, tout comme la chanson Off The Wall. L'album mêle habilement funk, soul et disco. Malgré ce succès et ces ventes impressionnantes, Michael Jackson n'est nommé aux Grammy Awards de 1980 que dans la catégorie meilleur chanteur R&B pour Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough. Il remporte cette récompense mais, extrêmement déçu de ne pas avoir été nommé pour l'album de l'année, il jure que son prochain album ne sera pas ainsi ignoré[33].

Le 1er décembre 1982, Michael Jackson sort Thriller qui remporte un succès immédiat en se vendant à un million d'exemplaires en un mois et dix millions sur un an[34]. L'album reste dans les classements pendant deux ans et se maintient pendant un total de 37 semaines numéro 1 du classement Billboard. Meilleur vente d'album aux États-Unis en 1983[35] et 1984[36], c'est le deuxième disque le plus vendu après le Greatest Hits (1971-1975) des Eagles[37]. Entre 1982 et 1996, il a été certifié à 25 millions d'exemplaires aux États-Unis et 20 millions à l'étranger[38]. Sept des chansons de l'album se classent dans le Top 10 du Billboard Hot 100. En mai 1984, Thriller est reconnu par le Livre Guinness des records comme l'album le plus vendu de tous les temps (25 millions d'exemplaires à l'époque)[39] et les estimations actuelles varient entre 65 et 108 millions d'exemplaires[7],[8]. Avec Thriller, Michael Jackson remporte huit récompenses aux American Music Awards et huit aux Grammy Awards[40] et le 20 novembre 1984, il obtient une étoile sur le Hollywood Walk of Fame[41].

Les trois clips vidéo (Billie Jean, Thriller et Beat It) accompagnant l'album Thriller sont de véritables mini-films avec de nombreux effets spéciaux. Le clip de 14 minutes de la chanson Thriller, d'un coût de 1 million de dollars, sorti le 2 décembre 1983 est une des premières vidéos d'un artiste noir-américain à être diffusé à grande échelle sur MTV[42]. La cassette vidéo The Making of Michael Jackson's Thriller est devenue à l'époque la plus vendue au monde[43].

Le 16 mai 1983, la Motown fête ses 25 ans et Michael apparaît en compagnie de ses frères dans l'émission spéciale Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever où le groupe interprète leurs plus grands titres. Michael Jackson interprète seul la chanson Billie Jean et effectue alors pour la première fois son Moonwalk qui lui vaut un standing ovation de la part du public et étonne même ses frères. Ce pas de danse deviendra ensuite un de ses pas de danse caractéristique[44]. Cette interprétation lui vaudra un appel et un télégramme de Fred Astaire : « Je suis un vieil homme, j'attendais la relève. Merci. ». Il y interprète aussi avec ses frères Never Can Say Goodbye et I'll Be There. Billie Jean fut la seule chanson n'appartenant pas au répertoire Motown à être interprétée ce soir-là.

Le 27 janvier, lors du tournage d'une publicité pour Pepsi Cola, une étincelle provoquée par les équipements pyrotechniques met le feu aux cheveux de Michael Jackson. Miko Brando, fils de l'acteur Marlon Brando, est la première personne à lui venir en aide, mais Michael est amené d'urgence au Cedars Sinaï Hostpital pour des brulures au deuxième et troisième degré du cuir chevelu. Les images de son entrée aux urgences sur un brancard, le crâne recouvert d'un grand bandage et sa main gantée saluant la foule font rapidement le tour du monde. Il devra subir des greffes de cuir chevelu. Avec l'argent qu'il touchera de l'assurance (un million et demi de dollars américains), il créera le « Michael Jackson Burn Center », un centre pour les grands brûlés. Furieux de cet accident, il envisagera de rompre son contrat avec Pepsi Cola, mais sa famille l'en dissuadera et il ira même jusqu'à le renouveler en 1991 afin de sponsoriser son « Dangerous World Tour », tout comme elle sponsorisait le « BAD World Tour » de 1987[45].

En 1984, l'album Victory scelle la désunion du groupe, chaque membre n'assurant la production que de ses propres compositions, dont pour Michael un duo avec Mick Jagger, State of Shock (originellement enregistré avec Freddie Mercury). Le Victory Tour marque la dernière apparition sur scène des frères Jackson jusqu'aux concerts du Madison Square Garden des 7 et 10 septembre 2001, en l'honneur des 30 ans de carrière solo de Michael. En 1989, les frères Jackson sortent leur dernier album, sur lequel Michael ne participe qu'à la chanson titre 2300 Jackson St. (puis apparaitra dans le clip).[réf. nécessaire]

En 1985, Michael Jackson coécrit avec Lionel Richie la chanson We Are the World pour une œuvre de charité en faveur de la lutte contre la faim en Afrique[46]. We Are the World réunit quarante-quatre chanteurs différents dont Harry Belafonte, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen et Tina Turner. Le single se vend à sept millions d'exemplaires aux États-Unis, devenant le single le plus vendu de tous les temps (record battu en 1997 par Elton John et son single Candle In The Wind).[réf. nécessaire]

En 1986, Michael Jackson tient le rôle principal dans le film 3D Captain Eo produit par George Lucas et réalisé par Francis Ford Coppola. Le film, diffusé dans les parcs d'attractions Disney jusqu'au 17 août 1998, a coûté plus de 17 millions de dollars à produire (un record pour un court-métrage).[réf. nécessaire] Il contient des chansons tel que We Are Here To Change The World.

Depuis le milieu des années 1980, la question de la modification physique de l'apparence de Michael Jackson fait la une des journaux tabloïdes et suscite l'étonnement de l'opinion publique. Selon ses déclarations, Michael Jackson a été brimé dans son enfance par son père, notamment sur son physique (il le surnommait "gros nez"). Il a aussi souffert très tôt de son exposition médiatique (notamment à l'adolescence), ce qui l'aurait mis en conflit avec sa propre image.

En 1987, Michael Jackson sort l'album Bad et part pour la première fois en tournée mondiale sans ses frères. L'année suivante, il sort un film réunissant différents clips, Moonwalker avec notamment Joe Pesci, et une biographie intitulée Moonwalk. Pendant un certain temps, Bad a été le deuxième album le plus vendu de tous les temps avec plus de 32 millions de copies à travers le monde dont 10 aux États-Unis et 5 en Angleterre record inégalé.

Bad est encore un énorme succès pour Jackson. Même si l'album n'atteint pas les records de ventes de Thriller, il contient néanmoins plus de "numéro 1". I Just Can't Stop Loving You sera enregistré en espagnol et en français sous les titres respectifs de Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu et Je ne veux pas la fin de nous.

Le clip du morceau Bad, réalisé par Martin Scorsese, est tourné dans le métro new-yorkais, dans une station désaffectée, qui sera détruite une semaine après le début du tournage (l'équipe a dû reconstituer la station dans les moindres détails).

Par ailleurs, les clips de The Way You Make Me Feel (clip relatant les gangs des rues), Man In The Mirror (appel à la paix et à l'amour, dont le clip montre les grands moments du XXe siècle et dénonce la pauvreté dans le monde), Dirty Diana (où Michael reproduit un mini-concert rock avec en guest star le guitariste Steve Stevens), Another Part Of Me (clip live du Bad Tour 88), Smooth Criminal (reprenant les moments forts du film Moonwalker), Liberian Girl puis Leave Me Alone sont une nouvelle série de succès.

Michael Jackson rentre à nouveau dans l'histoire musicale en devenant le premier artiste à avoir 5 singles classés numéro 1 au billboards americain d'un même album. Neuf singles en seront extraits.

Selon le producteur Quincy Jones dans la réédition de cet album en 2001, la chanson titre Bad devait être un duo avec son rival de longue date le chanteur Prince, mais finalement Prince déclina la proposition.

À la différence de Thriller et d'Off The Wall, Michael Jackson est le compositeur quasi exclusif de l'album puisque sur onze titres, il en compose neuf.

Musicalement, Bad a un son beaucoup plus métallique que Thriller, une rythmique plus complexe (Smooth Criminal notamment). Le son est plus brut, la voix de Michael y est plus rocailleuse, il n'y a aucun répit dans Bad, qui ne contient que 3 titres lents, I Just Can't Stop Loving You" Man In The Mirror et Liberian Girl, tous les autres titres étant de véritables monstres rythmiques.

En 1978, une chute sur scène lui aurait cassé le nez et obligé à subir une première rhinoplastie qui ne sera pas totalement réussie et qui sera corrigée par une seconde. Il ne reconnaît avoir subi que ces deux seules rhinoplasties. Beaucoup de rumeurs circulent sur les modifications qu'il aurait apporté à son visage et leur nombre, même si certaines sont farfelues, d'autres sont indéniables et poussent les chirurgiens esthétiques à citer Michael Jackson comme l'exemple à ne pas suivre.

En 1998, Steven Hoefflin, chirurgien esthétique et médecin personnel du chanteur depuis la fin des années 1970 (et accessoirement chirurgien plastique du tout Hollywood), pratique une dernière rhinoplastie sur Michael Jackson et le met en garde contre toute intervention supplémentaire. Malgré tout, Michael Jackson en subira une nouvelle, entre autres opérations, début 2001. Le 14 novembre 2002, lors d'un procès l'opposant au producteur allemand Marcel Avram, le chanteur apparaît avec le nez recouvert d'un pansement, ce qui amènera Hoefflin, probablement soucieux de garder sa clientèle, à publier un communiqué de presse insistant bien sur le fait qu'il n'aurait plus pratiqué d'interventions sur Jackson depuis 1998.

La couleur de peau du chanteur a elle aussi changé durant les années. Au début de son éclaircissement il ne s'exprimait pas sur le sujet étant donné que ce n'est pas la seule célébrité afro-américaine à suivre ce genre de démarche. Dans les années 1990, il a déclaré être atteint du vitiligo, une maladie décolorant la peau.

Le 20 mars 1991, Michael Jackson signe un contrat record de près d'un milliard de dollars U.S. avec Sony et sort l'album Dangerous. Musicalement, Dangerous marque un changement de cap par rapport à Bad avec l'arrivée de Teddy Riley, le créateur du New Jack Swing pour la co-production des titres avec Jackson. La production est nettement plus dépouillée que sur les albums précédents, les rythmiques sont synthétiques et minimales, le son toujours irréprochable est froid, malgré tout cela fonctionne et des morceaux comme Jam ou In the closet ont une dynamique incroyable, les textes sont innovants et fouillés, les mélodies plus complexes. Pendant sa tournée mondiale Dangerous Tour, Jackson annonce la création de son organisation caritative Heal The World (association qui sera rejointe par Heal The Kids en 2001 puis toutes les deux dissoutes la même année). L'album Dangerous contient les singles Who Is It, Give In To Me, Gone Too Soon (une chanson en l'hommage d'un jeune garçon victime du SIDA, Ryan White), et Will You Be There, qui deviendra plus tard le générique de fin du film Sauvez Willy.

Cependant, les singles les plus connus et ayant eu le plus de succès sont Jam, "Remember The Time", Black or White, In The Closet, et Heal The World. Comme à son habitude, Michael Jackson sort pour ces chansons les clips parmi les plus chers, les plus créatifs et les plus innovants de leur époque : Give In To Me avec la participation de Slash des Guns n' Roses, le clip de Heal The World (correspondant à l'organisation caritative du même nom. Le clip montre des enfants et des adultes du monde entier), Will You Be There avec Michael Jackson performant sur scène. Quelques-uns des autres clips ont un scénario et des séquences de danse plus complexes avec souvent des apparitions de célébrités : le clip de Jam montre Michael Jackson et Michael Jordan jouant au basketball et dansant ensemble, tandis que "Remember The Time" se déroule dans un palais égyptien avec la présence d'Eddie Murphy jouant un pharaon essayant d'amuser sa femme Iman. Magic Johnson tient le rôle du garde du pharaon. La danse et le chant de Michael Jackson est ce qui rend finalement le personnage de Iman heureux dans cette vidéo de 9 minutes. Le clip de "Who is it" a un ambiance sombre, tel un polar, montrant une femme aux multiples visages et Michael recherchant son-aimée. Dans In the Closet, Michael et Naomi Campbell font une parade nuptiale dans un décor de refuge désertique. Dans la pochette de l'album, la fille qui murmure dans In the Closet est nommée « the mysterious girl ». Il s'agit en fait de Stéphanie de Monaco qui de passage aux États-Unis s'est retrouvée par hasard à enregistrer sa voix pour Michael Jackson.

Tandis que Dangerous atteint 7 millions d'exemplaires vendus aux États-Unis, l'album devient le 3e album le plus vendu dans la carrière de Michael Jackson en atteignant 30 millions de copies vendues derrière Bad avec 32 millions de copies vendues

Parmi tous les clips issus de Dangerous, celui de Black or White est de loin le plus diffusé, le plus populaire et le plus marquant à ce jour. Cette vidéo, dont la durée originale est de 10 minutes, a été diffusée en mondiovision le 14 novembre 1991 sur les chaînes MTV, VH1, BET et ABC, établissant ainsi un record avec sa première diffusion suivie par près de 500 millions de téléspectateurs dans le monde. La vidéo originale commence dans une banlieue américaine avec l'acteur Macaulay Culkin jouant le rôle d'un jeune fan de Michael Jackson et dont le père lui ordonne d'éteindre la musique qu'il écoute. Mais au lieu de faire cela, le personnage de Macaulay Culkin décide d'amener des enceintes géantes dans son salon en mettant le son à fond, ce qui envoie le père sur son fauteuil à travers le toit ! Le père atterrit en plein milieu d'une savane africaine. La musique de Black Or White démarre alors, et Michael Jackson amène les téléspectateurs dans un voyage autour du monde, de pays en pays et de culture en culture. À la fin de la chanson, le clip présente une séquence de morphing de visages de personnes de sexes, d'origines et de couleurs différentes (parmi ces personnes figure le mannequin Tyra Banks) pour symboliser l'unité des êtres humains. Bien que Black Or White n'ait pas été le premier clip vidéo à utiliser le morphage (le groupe Godley & Creme en ayant déjà utilisé une forme moins avancée pour la vidéo de leur chanson Cry en 1985), il a été le premier à exposer de manière massive cet effet spécial aux yeux du public, et a donc surpris beaucoup de monde. Grâce à Black Or White, ainsi qu'avec le développement de la puissance des ordinateurs, le morphage est devenu désormais quelque chose de très courant dans les clips vidéos d'aujourd'hui.

Le clip de Black Or White continue après la fin de chanson. Les quatre dernières minutes montrent Michael Jackson dansant dans une rue déserte la nuit faisant quelques gestes (qui ont été considérés comme obscènes ou en tout cas fort suggestifs) détruisant des vitres de magasins et une voiture avec un pied de biche. Il y a cependant des inscriptions nazies ou racistes sur les objets que détruit le chanteur, ce qui montre une nouvelle fois son engagement dans la lutte pour l'égalité entre les Hommes. Le clip se termine enfin avec une apparition des personnages animés Bart et Homer Simpson. Cette fin de clip déclencha une vive réaction de la part de certains parents qui l'avaient vue. MTV et d'autres chaînes décidèrent de couper par la suite la fin du clip vidéo pour toutes les diffusions ultérieures, et Michael Jackson publia un communiqué dans lequel il s'excusa auprès de toutes les personnes qui avaient été offensées. Le clip a alors été modifié par un rajout de symboles nazis et racistes dans la séquence de fin pour justifier la violence de Michael.[réf. nécessaire]


Pendant plusieurs années, les quatre dernières minutes du clip ont seulement été rediffusées aux États-Unis sur la chaîne MTV 2 entre une heure et quatre heures du matin dans une émission spéciale sans censure « Les clips vidéos les plus controversés ». La version intégrale modifiée du clip reste disponible sur les DVDs de Michael Jackson. Aujourd'hui, le clip entier est diffusé lors des émissions spéciales consacrées à l'artiste (tel que le Week-End Michael Jackson sur VH-1.

En août 1993, Michael Jackson est accusé d'abus sexuel sur mineur par un enfant de treize ans prénommé Jordan Chandler[47]. Michael Jackson et la famille Chandler s'étaient rencontrés en 1992 et une forte amitié s'était développée entre Michael et Jordan. En février 1993, Michael invite Jordan et sa famille à passer un week-end au ranch de Neverland et dans les mois qui suivent, Jordan, sa demie-sœur et sa mère accompagnent Michael dans de nombreux déplacements. Cette forte complicité entre Michael et Jordan rend Evan, son père biologique, jaloux. Après lui avoir administré un sédatif, Jordan avoue à son père que Michael Jackson a pratiqué des attouchements sexuels sur lui. Evan exige alors de Michael Jackson qu'il paye 20 millions de dollars pour régler cette histoire ou il ira porter plainte et fera témoigner Jordan contre lui. Jackson refuse et ses avocats prétendent que toutes ces accusations ne sont qu'une tentative d'extorsion de fonds[48]. Quelques jours plus tard, l'affaire prend encore plus d'ampleur lorsque Jordan affirme à un psychiatre que lui et Michael Jackson s'étaient embrassés, masturbés et avaient eu des rapports bucco-génitaux[49],[48].

Jordan Chandler porte plainte au civil en septembre 1993[48] et une enquête officielle est alors ouverte et la mère de Chandler affirme de manière catégorique que rien dans le comportement de Michael Jackson n'est à reprocher[50]. Des fouilles sont organisées au ranch de Neverland et enfants et membres de la famille Jackson démentent que Michael soit pédophile[51].

Afin de gérer le stress dû à ces accusations, Michael Jackson commence à prendre des antidouleurs, du Valium, du Xanax et de l'Ativan, auxquels il devient dépendant à l'automne 1993[52]. Sa santé s'est détériorée à un tel point qu'il a dû annuler le reste de la tournée Dangerous World Tour pour faire une cure de désintoxication pendant quelques semaines[53]. Avec le stress, Michael a également stoppé de s'alimenter et a commencé à perdre du poids. Avec une santé déclinante, ses amis et avocats se sont occupés de sa défense et de ses finances et lui conseillent de gérer les accusations en-dehors des tribunaux, estimant qu'il ne pourrait pas supporter un long procès. À cause de ces accusations, il stoppe sa tournée Dangerous World Tour en novembre et Pepsi Cola rompt son contrat publicitaire avec le chanteur. Son image publique se dégrade encore plus lorsque sa sœur ainée, LaToya, annonce qu'elle a des doutes sur l'innocence de son frère, avant de retirer ses déclarations[54]

Au cours des premières audiences, Jordan donne une description très détaillée des parties génitales de Michael Jackson et celui-ci se résout à une fouille corporelle de 25 minutes, réalisée à son ranch, afin de vérifier si la description donnée par Chandler est fondée[55],[48]. Michael fait alors une déclaration publique où il proclame son innocence et critique les médias pour ce qu'il perçoit comme un parti-pris envers lui[56].

Après avoir interrogé de nombreux témoins, la justice constate le manque de preuve pour soutenir les accusations et clôt cette enquête pénal pour non-lieu[57]. En janvier 1994, la famille Chandler et l'équipe de Michael Jackson signent un accord de 22 millions de dollars pour voir la plainte retirée. Cette transaction met fin à la plainte civile[57].

Peu après cette histoire, le 26 mai 1994, Michael Jackson se marie avec la fille d'Elvis Presley, Lisa-Marie Presley, au cours d'une cérémonie privée en République dominicaine[58]. Lisa-Marie et Michael s'étaient déjà rencontrés en 1975 lorsque la famille Jackson était en représentation à Las Vegas[59]. Ils se rencontrent de nouveau en 1993 par le biais d'un ami commun et se marient après s'être fréquentés pendant quatre mois. Lisa-Marie et Michael n'annoncent officiellement le mariage que le 1er août 1994[58]. À l'époque, de nombreux média émettent l'hypothèse que ce mariage n'est qu'une manœuvre organisée par Michael afin de détourner l'attention de ses problèmes judiciaires et de redorer son image auprès du public ou bien que c'est une technique de Lisa-Marie afin d'extorquer de l'argent à Michael pour l'église de scientologie, ce que tout deux refutent[60],[61]. Ils se séparent cependant d'un commun accord le 18 janvier 1996, pour cause de « différences irréconciliables »[62].

HIStory: Past, Present and Future – Book I, un double album, sort en juin 1995. C'est le double album le plus vendu de tous les temps.[63] Le premier disque contient quinze des plus grands succès remastérisés de Michael Jackson. Une 16eme piste est présente sur ce premier disque, mais uniquement pour les premiers pressages vendus. Cette piste bonus contient un message audio remerciant les fans de leur soutien et la deuxième galette 15 nouvelles chansons (dont une reprise des Beatles, Come Together, enregistrée des années auparavant pour le film Moonwalker). L'album a conduit à de nouveaux singles et clips en tête des classements américains : Scream, en duo avec sa sœur Janet, You Are Not Alone avec une brève apparition de Lisa Marie Presley (épouse de Michael à l'époque) et Earth Song. Le clip de Scream en duo avec sa sœur Janet dans une vidéo futuriste est reconnu comme étant le clip le plus cher de toute l'histoire de la musique. On estimerait le budget de ce clip à une valeur de 7 millions de dollars. On y retrouve de très célèbres peintures et sculptures originales.[réf. nécessaire]

Les autres singles de l'album, Childhood, Earth Song, Stranger In Moscow, et They Don't Care About Us ont eu un succès limité aux États-Unis contrairement à l'Europe. Au Royaume-Uni, Earth Song est resté six semaines en tête des hit-parades et est le single de Michael le plus vendu dans ce pays (devant Billie Jean). Earth Song est un hymne Pop-Gospel contre la destruction de l'environnement. Au final, l'album s'est vendu à plus de 38 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde.

La chanson Childhood devient la bande originale du film Sauvez Willy 2.

They Don't Care About Us déclencha une polémique[réf. nécessaire] à sa sortie à cause de ses paroles controversés, que certains considèrent comme antisémites, ce dont Jackson se défend. Les phrases « Jew me, sue me / Kick me, kike me » sont modifiées dans une deuxième vague de sortie de l'album. Dans cette chanson, le chanteur exprime son désir de ne pas être enfermé dans des catégories liées à sa couleur de peau ou à ses origines : « Traitez moi de juif, de blanc ou de noir » (« Don't you black or white me »). Spike Lee tournera deux versions de ce clip. L'une où Jackson danse dans les favelas de Rio, l'autre, boycottée par les chaînes musicales américaines qui refusent de la diffuser avant 21 heures, où Jackson interprète le titre dans une cellule de prison tapissée d'écrans qui diffusent des images d'actualité de guerre, de famine et de bavures policières. Un autre single de l'album aurait dû voir le jour, Smile, hommage à Charlie Chaplin, mais fut annulé peu avant sa distribution.

Jackson s'est ensuite remarié le 15 novembre 1996 avec une femme de confession juive, Deborah Rowe dit "Debbie", infirmière en dermatologie qu'il connaissait depuis 1981. Ils ont eu ensemble un fils le 13 février 1997 qu'ils ont appelé Prince Michael Junior, et une fille appelée Paris Katherine Michael le 3 avril 1998, puis ont divorcé à l'amiable le 8 octobre 1999. Deborah Rowe alias Debbie déclarera laisser en « cadeau » (réclamant quelques millions de dollars) les deux enfants à la garde exclusive de Michael Jackson, en abandonnant ses droits parentaux. En décembre 2005, Debbie Rowe ayant changé d'avis, elle saisissait un tribunal familial pour reprendre ses droits parentaux. L'affaire a depuis été résolue de manière à satisfaire les deux parents. Les parrains des deux enfants sont les stars Elizabeth Taylor et Macaulay Culkin.

En 1997, Sony impose à Michael Jackson de sortir Blood On The Dance Floor, un album de remixes de quelques chansons de HIStory ainsi que 5 nouvelles chansons. Cet album est destiné à accompagner la partie européenne du HIStory World Tour.

La chanson titre sort en single accompagnée d'un clip co-réalisé par Michael. L'album est passé presque inaperçu aux États-Unis mais a encore une fois été plus populaire en Europe. Ce fut l'album de remixes le plus vendu au monde (avec 6 millions d'exemplaires vendus).[réf. nécessaire]

Michael Jackson a également produit Ghosts, un court métrage à sensation de 40 minutes réalisé par Stan Winston, et écrit par Michael et Stephen King, qui a été diffusé hors-compétition au Festival de Cannes de 1997 puis dans quelques salles de cinéma. Le film utilise les chansons 2 Bad, Ghosts et "Is It Scary" (2 titres inédits de l'album Blood on the Dancefloor). Ghosts est le second single de l'album de remix, accompagné d'un clip réunissant des images du court-métrage. Celui-ci est occasionnellement diffusé sur les chaînes télévisées musicales, surtout pendant la période de Halloween.

Au début du printemps 1998, John Mc Clain, co-fondateur du label A&M et responsable du succès de Janet Jackson, devient le nouveau manager de Michael. En juin 1999 sont organisés deux concerts intitulés Michael Jackson & Friends à but caritatif, l'un à Séoul et l'autre à Munich. Ces concerts réunissent sur scène avec Michael certaines des plus grandes stars mondiales (Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, Scorpions, Noa, Ringo Starr...). Une chanson écrite pour l'occasion, What More Can I Give, ne sera finalement pas interprétée sur scène ni commercialisée avant les attentats du 11 septembre 2001.

Le single de What More Can I Give réunissant Michael et de très nombreux artistes comme Céline Dion, Beyoncé, Usher, Luther Vandross, Mariah Carey, ne sort pas dans le commerce suite au refus de Sony (le producteur de la chanson serait également un producteur de films pornographiques) mais est quand même disponible en téléchargement payant sur internet et les fonds récoltés iront aux victimes des attentats du 11 septembre. Une version espagnole a aussi été produite, Todo Para Ti, avec entre autres Shakira, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, ainsi qu'un clip (version anglophone).

En mars 2001, Michael est introduit en tant qu'artiste solo au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (il y avait été déjà introduit avec ses frères en 1997).

Les 7 et 10 septembre 2001, il fête ses trente ans de carrière solo et donne avec ses frères un show au Madison Square Garden (New York).

En 2002, Jackson a eu un autre fils, Prince Michael II, surnommé « Blanket », dont l'identité de la mère est restée confidentielle, et avec lequel il déclencha une grande polémique.

En octobre 2001 sort Invincible, l'album le plus cher jamais produit (avec un production avoisinant les 30 millions de dollars), qui débuta numéro 1 au classement américain Billboard, se vendant à 2,5 millions d'exemplaires aux USA et à ce jour plus de 11 millions de copies dans le monde.

Bien que les chiffres restent impressionnant pour n'importe quel artiste, ils restent décevants en comparaison avec les succès précédents du chanteur et du coût de production de l'album. Invincible marque une nouvelle étape dans le style musical de Michael Jackson, puisqu'il s'oriente vers le R'n'B avec l'aide de nouveaux producteurs tels que Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins.

Contrairement aux albums précédents avec lesquels près de 9 singles étaient commercialisés (7 pour Thriller, 9 pour Bad et Dangerous et 6 pour HIStory), Invincible a produit seulement deux singles aux États-Unis avec You Rock My World et Butterflies. Cry a également fait l'objet d'un troisième single mais uniquement en Europe.

You Rock My World se classe à la 10e position aux États-Unis (Billboard Hot 100), mais pendant une semaine. Le clip vidéo à gros budget pour cette chanson, avec l'apparition de Marlon Brando, Michael Madsen, Chris Tucker et Billy Drago, dure au total 14 minutes et il existe une version courte de 5 minutes. Michael fait dans ce clip des allusions à ses anciennes chansons, à ses anciens clips et aux chorégraphies qui l'ont rendu célèbre. Il existe aussi un remix de la chanson avec le rappeur Jay-Z.

Butterflies est rentré dans le Top 20 américain et est même monté à la deuxième place du classement R'n'B sans avoir un single de commercialisé[réf. nécessaire], mais son succès reste mitigé dans ce pays malgré un remix radio assez populaire avec la rappeuse Eve.

Le manque de succès de Invincible repose pour partie dans sa très faible promotion, ce qui ouvre une crise entre Sony et Michael Jackson : plusieurs sorties de singles sont annulées (dont Unbreakable) et la promotion de cet album est arrêtée trois mois à peine après sa sortie.[réf. nécessaire]

Le 13 juin 2002, Michael Jackson a été introduit, pour son travail de compositeur, au Songwriters Hall of Fame. À cette même période, il accuse publiquement le PDG de Sony Music, Tommy Mottola, d'avoir saboté la promotion de son album Invincible[64]. Un procès aura lieu et Tommy Mottola sera limogé de son poste suite a ces accusations.

En une semaine, Invincible s'est néanmoins vendu à plus de 166 000 exemplaires en France, ce qui en fait l'album le plus vendu en une semaine par un artiste étranger dans ce pays.[réf. nécessaire]

Michael Jackson n'a jamais interprété les titres contenus dans Invincible (hormis lors du concert au Madison Square Garden où il interpréta pour la première et dernière fois You rock my world). Ainsi, l'album fut tombé dans l'oubli 3 mois après sa sortie (contrairement à ses précédents opus qui profitaient d'une promotion s'étallant sur deux ans).

Au mois de novembre de 2002, le chanteur s'est rendu en Allemagne dans la ville de Berlin, afin d'y recevoir une récompense lors d'une grande soirée. La cérémonie était considérée suffisamment importante pour qu'un juge américain autorise à repousser la date de son témoignage dans le cadre d'une plainte déposée par le producteur allemand Marcel Avram concernant l'annulation de concerts prévus quelques années auparavant. Lors de l'arrivée de la star à Berlin, ses admirateurs ont rapidement appris qu'il résidait au très chic hôtel Adlon. Ils se sont réunis sous la fenêtre de sa suite pour l'appeler et l'acclamer, et ont chanté une chanson condamnant les médias pour leur couverture négative des différents problèmes judiciaires de Jackson. Selon le chanteur, ses admirateurs ont également crié qu'ils voulaient voir Prince Michael II. En réponse, celui-ci apporta son plus jeune fils sur le balcon, en l'entourant de son bras droit et avec un léger voile sur la tête, apparemment pour protéger son identité. Il l'a alors tenu quelques secondes au-dessus de la rambarde du balcon. Ce geste fut vivement critiqué par la presse du monde entier, qui a considéré qu'il y avait mise en danger de la vie d'un enfant. Il s'agit là d'une des plus grosses bourdes de sa carrière, médiatiquement parlant. Après avoir vu la couverture médiatique de l'évènement, la procureur de Californie (où se trouvait la résidence principale de Michael Jackson avant qu'il ne vive à Bahreïn en 2005) a écrit une lettre au Service californien de Protection à l'Enfance afin de déclencher une procédure d'investigation sur la santé, la sûreté des trois enfants de Michael Jackson et la capacité de celui-ci à les élever.

Quelques jours plus tard, le chanteur présenta ses excuses dans un communiqué écrit où il a précisé qu'il tenait très fermement son fils et qu'il avait fait ce geste de manière précipitée et irréfléchie devant les nombreuses acclamations des fans en bas de l'hôtel : « J'ai fait une terrible erreur. J'ai été pris par l'excitation du moment. Jamais je ne mettrais volontairement la vie de mes enfants en danger. » Dans un reportage intitulé Living With Michael Jackson en février 2003, Jackson est revenu sur le déclenchement de cette polémique en déclarant que les médias avaient eu tort dans leurs commentaires qui le déclaraient irresponsable : « J'adore mes enfants. Je tenais mon fils très fermement contre moi. Pourquoi essayerais-je de jeter un bébé par un balcon ? C'est l'histoire la plus ridicule et la plus stupide que j'ai jamais entendue. »

Lors de leurs apparitions publiques, les visages de Prince, Paris et « Blanket » sont dissimulés sous des masques pour enfants ou des voiles, afin d'assurer leur sécurité en préservant leur identité. Debbie Rowe déclara que c'était son idée à cause des nombreuses menaces de mort anonymes et de possibles tentatives d'enlèvement à l'encontre des enfants, qu'ils recevaient. Michael a affirmé dans une interview qu'il adorerait amener ses enfants sur scène avec lui et montrer leurs visages à ses fans.

Au même moment, Michael Jackson apparaît dans l'entretien Living With Michael Jackson, filmé en 2002 mais diffusé le 3 février 2003 sur Granada Television, dans lequel il parle de son enfance, de sa jeunesse et de sa vie privée. Au cours de l'entretien avec Martin Bashir, diffusé sur ITV et regardé par plus de 15 millions de personnes[65], Jackson révèle une personnalité décalée et excentrique. Il est vu en train de dépenser plus de six millions de dollars dans un magasin à Las Vegas[66]. Il évoque aussi lorsqu'il partage sa chambre avec des adolescents, notamment avec Gavin Arvizo, âgé de 14 ans, et dort avec eux dans la même chambre. Le 18 novembre 2003, 70 policiers perquisitionnent Neverland. Un mandat d'arrêt est lancé contre la star, qui se trouvait alors à Las Vegas pour tourner un vidéo-clip[67]. Acceptant de s'en remettre aux forces de l'ordre deux jours plus tard, Jackson déclare être victime d'une tentative d'extorsion de fonds de la part d'une famille de maîtres chanteurs. Le procureur qui mène l'enquête, Thomas Sneddon, est le même qui, dix ans auparavant, avait dû classer l'affaire suite au retrait d'une plainte pour le même genre d'affaire.

Après la diffusion du reportage, Gavin Arvizo commence à accuser Jackson d'avoir abusé de lui et de son frère cadet, il prétend que le chanteur leur a servi du vin, qu'il appelle « jus de Jésus »[68] et qu'à deux reprises, il s'est masturbé en leur présence et leur a montré des sites internet pour adultes[69]. Janet Arvizo, la mère de Gavin, prétend aussi avoir été séquestrée avec ses enfants à Neverland, le ranch de la star. Une enquête démontrera que cette personne était une habituée des plaintes calomnieuses, et que celle-ci avait ouvert 14 comptes en banque pour récolter de l'argent et escroquer les services sociaux.

Michael Jackson, qui clame son innocence, se voit signifier, le 31 janvier 2003, 10 chefs d'inculpation susceptibles d'être punis par 20 ans de prison[70]. Le procès People v. Jackson s'ouvre à Santa Maria deux ans après les premières charges et dure cinq mois, jusqu'à la fin mai 2005. Durant le procès, à cause du stress, la santé de Michael Jackson décline. Il perd du poids et se voit hospitalisé à deux reprises[71]. Le 13 juin 2005, le jury du tribunal rend son verdict et innocente Michael Jackson de tous les chefs d'inculpation[72]. Dans une conférence de presse, le jury a souligné le manque total de preuves, les témoignages accusateurs qui se contredisent et la nature manipulatrice de la mère[73].

En 2003, Sony sort une compilation CD et DVD de tous les titres de Michael Jackson ayant été numéro 1. Intitulée Number Ones, la compilation contient également une nouvelle chanson, One More Chance, composée par R. Kelly[74]. Le disque se vend à 6 millions d'exemplaires dans le monde[75],[76]. Le 16 novembre 2004, Michael Jackson sort un box set de 4 CD et 1 DVD, intitulé The Ultimate Collection, retraçant l'ensemble de sa carrière et avec d'ancien morceaux inédits, des démos, des versions inédites et quelques nouvelles chansons. Cheater sert de façon restreinte à la promo du coffret et son clip composé d'extraits du DVD Dangerous Tour est diffusé sur certaines chaînes musicales. Un autre clip est diffusé, "Beat It", extrait du même DVD.

Le 19 juillet 2005, une nouvelle compilation The Essential Michael Jackson sort ainsi qu'un DVD contenant le concert de Bucarest du Dangerous World Tour. Contre toute attente, le CD compilation se vend très bien (no 1 en France et plus de 350 000 exemplaires vendus), le DVD également (no 1 des ventes de DVD musicaux en France) profitant sans doute de la curiosité d'un nouveau public après le procès.

Le 18 avril 2006, Michael Jackson quitte le label Epic Records (et donc sa maison de disques Sony BMG), sous lequel il produisait tous ses albums solo depuis Off The Wall en 1979. Il signe un contrat avec le producteur de musique anglais Guy Holmes, PDG du label indépendant 2 Seas Records. Le contrat prévoyait la production d'au moins un nouvel album, dont la sortie était prévue pour fin 2007[77]. Ce contrat a été rompu en septembre 2006.

En novembre 2006, Michael Jackson se rend à Londres afin de visiter les bureaux du Livre Guinness des records. Il reçoit à cette occasion un prix pour avoir battu huit records dont celui de « Premier artiste à avoir gagné plus de 100 millions de dollars en un an », « Premier artiste à avoir vendu plus de 100 millions de disques en dehors des États-Unis » ou « Meilleur artiste de tous les temps »[78],[79]. Michael Jackson est également présent aux World Music Awards pour y recevoir le Diamond Award, récompense réservé aux artistes ayant vendus plus de 100 millions d'albums[80].

À l'occasion des 25 ans de la sortie de l'album Thriller, Michael Jackson sort Thriller 25 le 11 février 2008[81]. Il comprend deux titres inédits, For all time et Gots the hots (uniquement sur la version japonaise du disque) ainsi que des titres originaux remasterisés et cinq titres remixés ou en featuring avec des artistes comme Akon, Fergie, Will.I.Am des Black Eyed Peas et Kanye West[82]. Deux singles extraits de Thriller 25, The Girl is Mine 2008 (avec Will.I.Am) et Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' 2008 (avec Akon) sortent également simultanément. L'album comprend également un DVD des clips vidéos de Billie Jean, Beat It, Thriller et la prestation de Michael Jackson lors des 25 ans de la Motown. Thriller 25 se classe en première place des ventes dans de nombreux pays européens[83] et en deuxième place aux États-Unis[84]. L'album se vend en tout à plus de 3 millions d'exemplaires[85].

Le 29 août 2008, pour célébrer le cinquantième anniversaire de Michael Jackson, sort King Of Pop, une compilation de 18 chansons dont la liste a été choisie par des fans[86]. Le disque n'est pas sorti aux États-Unis mais a été classé parmi les 10 meilleures ventes dans de nombreux pays[87].

Après avoir failli vendre aux enchères le ranch de Neverland le 19 mars 2008 pour couvrir une dette de 24,5 millions de dollars, le fonds d'investissements américain Colony Capital a levé l'hypothèque. Le ranch a finalement été vendu pour 35 millions de dollars début novembre 2008 et a pris pour nom Sycamore Valley Ranch[88].

En décembre 2008, le magazine Rolling Stone le classe 25e des plus grand chanteurs de tous les temps[89].

Après avoir vécu à Bahreïn, à Las Vegas et à Los Angeles, Michael Jackson retourne en janvier 2009 vivre définitivement aux États-Unis, à Bel Air[90].

Le 5 mars 2009, Michael Jackson annonce qu'il entamera ses dernières représentations scéniques à Londres, les This is it show, une série de 50 concerts à Londres.[91] Selon Randy Phillips, le président du promoteur de concerts AEG Live, Michael Jackson devait faire des concerts s'étalant sur 3 ans et lancer un nouvel album, dans le cadre de son grand retour [92].

Le 29 juin, Sony sort The Collection, un coffret regroupant 5 albums du chanteur, les albums Off the wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous et Invincible.

Le 6 juillet, dans le cadre de la promotion des shows This is it, Sony Music décide de sortir The Hits, une compilation regroupant tous ses tubes depuis les Jackson 5 jusqu'à son dernier succès You Rock My World sorti en 2001.

Le 25 juin 2009, Michael Jackson se trouvait dans sa maison de Dr Holmby Hills, à Los Angeles, quartier de Bel-Air, Carolwood Drive (il l'occupait depuis janvier). Un peu avant 13h00 heure locale (22h00 heure de Paris), les pompiers du Los Angeles Fire Department reçoivent un appel au 911 d'un des membres du personnel du chanteur, en provenance de sa maison, appel annonçant qu'il venait de faire un arrêt cardiaque[93].

Arrivés sur place, les ambulanciers voient un docteur procéder à une réanimation cardio-pulmonaire (CPR). L'artiste est transporté d'urgence mais, malgré un massage cardiaque en vue d'une réanimation sur la route, les ambulanciers constatent dès le départ qu'il est déjà en état d’arrêt cardiaque complet : son pouls est arrêté, sa respiration nulle. Le corps de Michael Jackson arrive aux urgences de l'UCLA Medical Center de Westwood Village six minutes plus tard. Malgré des tentatives de réanimation sans résultat, sa mort sera prononcée à 14h26. Le décès n'est en effet officialisé que tardivement, après des rumeurs d'état de coma profond. La star avait cinquante ans. Les circonstances du décès restant floues, une enquête du département de Los Angeles des vols et homocides est menée, bien qu'une intention criminelle semble hors de cause ; le coroner (justice) déterminera la cause de sa mort. Johnny Caswell, qui voyait Michael Jackson s'entraîner pour ses concerts de Londres à l'espace Burbank, s'est dit tout à fait choqué par l'annonce de sa mort ; bien qu'en forme générale, M. Jackson avait une santé reconnue comme fragile.

La fortune de Michael Jackson est difficile à évaluer. Sa plus grosse affaire financière a été en août 1985 lorsqu'il a acheté pour 47,5 millions de dollars des parts du catalogue Sony/ATV Publishing, qui lui permettent de percevoir les droits de plus de 4 000 chansons écrites par plusieurs chanteurs ou groupes de musique, dont 251 chansons des Beatles.

La moitié du catalogue détenu par Michael Jackson (l'autre moitié étant sous la possession de Sony Records) aurait aujourd'hui une valeur estimée à plus de 7 milliard de dollars (cf. Wall Street Journal[réf. insuffisante]).

En octobre 2002, diverses banques internationales ont prétendu que Michael était endetté de plusieurs dizaines de millions de dollars. Le même mois, un organisateur de concerts, Marcel Avram, a poursuivi Michael Jackson devant le tribunal de Santa Maria en Californie, en prétendant que Michael avait illégalement rompu un contrat pour la tenue de deux concerts pour le passage au nouvel an 1999-2000. Michael a perdu le procès mais a fait appel du jugement.

Michael Jackson est également en conflit avec son ancien conseiller financier, l'entreprise sud-coréenne Union Finance and Investment Corporation, qui prétend que Jackson doit à la firme plus de 12 millions de dollars de frais et dépenses et que le train de vie extravagant du chanteur l'ont conduit à la banqueroute.

De plus, le fait que Michael Jackson ne sorte pas de nouvel album depuis 2001 et les mauvais placements ont amené inévitablement à une chute de ses revenus.

Les shows londoniens (This is it) lui aurait permi de gagner près de 215 millions d'euro et ainsi de se stabiliser financièrement.

Bien que considéré comme le « roi de la pop », Michael Jackson s'est attaqué à plusieurs styles musicaux. D'un registre disco-funk dans Off The Wall[réf. nécessaire], il est passé à un style mélangeant funk, hard rock (Beat It), ballade et soul dans Thriller[95].

À ses débuts, le jeune Michael Jackson doit sa technique vocale en grande partie à Diana Ross. En octobre 1969, il est décidé que Michael habiterait chez Diana Ross. Il lui arrivait souvent de l'observer en train de répéter. Il confessera plus tard : « C'était elle que j'étudiais, sa façon de bouger, sa façon de chanter, sa façon d'être, tout simplement. Et après, je lui disais, “Je veux être exactement comme toi, Diana” »[96]. Mais Michael doit surtout à Diana Ross les ooohs de ses débuts. À ses débuts, Michael ponctuait presque toujours ses vers de ooohs. Pas un long oooh mais plutôt une exclamation soudaine. Diana usait de cet effet sur beaucoup des chansons enregistrées avec les Supremes, et Michael était ravi de se l'approprier [97].

Michael Jackson est reconnu comme le précurseur du clip vidéo style mini-film servant à la promotion. En effet, pour la première fois, un scénario apparaît dans les clips vidéo et ce grâce à son clip Thriller d'une durée inhabituelle lors de sa sortie en 1983 (14 minutes) et sa chorégraphie ayant fait le succès de la chaîne américaine MTV. Mais Thriller n'est pas la première vidéo dans laquelle il s'implique. En effet, le clip de Can you feel it est inspiré de Rencontres du troisième type et imaginée par l'artiste lui-même (Can you feel it étant une chanson des Jacksons). Parmi ses clips les plus célèbres apparaissent Billie Jean, Beat it, Thriller, Bad, The way you make me feel, Smooth criminal, Black or white, Ghosts, Remember the time, Jam, ou encore Scream.

Michael Jackson a fait l'objet de plusieurs jeux vidéo :

* Moonwalker est un jeu d'arcade sur Megadrive et Master System[98]. Le joueur y incarne Michael Jackson dans l'histoire adaptée du film homonyme. Le jeu est également sorti sur micro-ordinateur PC, Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC et Commodore 64 dans une version totalement différente. Une autre version est sortie dans les salles d'arcade sur le hardware System 16 de Sega[99] ; il s'agit ici d'un jeu d'action en vue isométrique.

* AS-1 (Virtual Ride Motion Theater System) sur borne d'arcade. Simulation spatiale de Sega, avec Michael Jackson en commandant.

* Space Channel 5 sur Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 et Gameboy Advance. Le personnage de Space Michael apparaît après la réussite des derniers niveaux du jeu. Il s'agit d'une modélisation de Michael Jackson, dans un costume argenté futuriste.

* Space Channel 5: Part 2 sur Dreamcast et PlayStation 2. Le personnage de Space Michael réapparait dans les derniers niveaux du jeu. Contrairement au premier volet, il faut cette fois-ci le secourir. Pendant cette partie du jeu, le joueur peut voir Space Michael danser une chorégraphie rappelant celles de Bad, Beat it et Thriller avec l'héroïne, Ulala.

* Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 est un jeu de boxe sur PlayStation 2 et Dreamcast avec Michael Jackson comme personnage caché.
